IPL governing council chairman Brijesh Patel has confirmed the news yesterday. BCCI has officially waited for ICC to postpone T2O World cup and currently, BCCI is seeking government permission to hold the cash-rich event in UAE. However official schedule has not been confirmed yet and it will be confirmed during the next meeting of the governing council. As of now, BCCI has zeroed-in the dates for the biggest franchise-based T20 league. He also clarified that BCCI has been waiting for permission from the Indian government to hold the event in UAE.
The tournament will be played in three major venues Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. The decision on holding the event on closed doors will be taken after consulting with the UAE government. Franchises have not been formally informed about the tournament shift. Earlier BCCI has looked for every formidable option to hold the event in India but due to the widespread of COVID-19 and considering major metropolitans are severely affected from the deadly virus it is not eventually feasible to hold the annual showpiece event in India. As of now, India ranks third in the widespread of COVID-19. Also, BCCI has planned to conduct the event on closed doors with Mumbai being the major hub and virus spread in Mumbai has increased exponentially.
The tournament was originally slated to hold between April and May this year but COVID-19 pandemic followed by countrywide lockdown has prompted the BCCI to postpone the event indefinitely. The move marks the second time the event has been shifted to UAE as in 2014 20 matches were shifted to UAE due to general elections. The franchises are expected to set up their base a month in advance after the government gives nod to hold the event in UAE. Players are expected to arrive early and are expected to follow strict quarantine rules imposed by the UAE government.
The schedule was planned to provide enough time for the players to get ready for the event and it will also provide players to have ample amount of time to get ready for four-match test series against Australia which is expected to begin from December this year.
